Systematic position: Diaphania is a genus of moths belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. These insects are widely known for their larvae, which act as serious pests in tropical and subtropical agriculture. The genus includes several species, with Diaphania indica (the cucumber moth) being the most prominent due to its high impact on commercial horticulture and private vegetable gardens.

Host plants: The primary hosts of Diaphania are plants within the Cucurbitaceae family. This includes a wide range of popular crops such as cucumbers, melons, watermelons, pumpkins, squash, and bitter gourds. The pest is particularly attracted to succulent parts of these plants, which provide necessary nutrients for the rapid development of larvae and ensure high survival rates for the population.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult moths are nocturnal and lay their eggs on the underside of leaves or directly onto young fruits. Once hatched, the larvae feed voraciously. Depending on environmental conditions, the entire life cycle can be completed in less than a month, leading to multiple overlapping generations throughout the growing season.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Diaphania effectively:

  • Early detection through regular field scouting and monitoring.
