Description
The Northern walkingstick (Diapheromera femorata) belongs to the order Phasmatodea and the family Diapheromeridae. These insects are masters of camouflage, evolving to mimic the appearance of twigs and branches. While they are often considered a natural part of forest ecosystems, their populations can occasionally reach levels where they become significant pests to various hardwood species.
These insects primarily feed on the foliage of deciduous trees. Preferred hosts include oaks, basswood, and hazel, though they may also attack various fruit trees. During outbreaks, the sheer number of insects feeding simultaneously can cause severe defoliation across vast forest areas, which puts immense stress on the trees and reduces their overall health and vigor throughout the growing season.
The life cycle of the Northern walkingstick is characterized by incomplete metamorphosis. Eggs are laid in late summer and autumn, falling to the forest floor where they overwinter in the leaf litter. Hatching typically occurs in the spring. Once emerged, the nymphs go through several molting stages, growing progressively larger while feeding on tender leaves. By mid-to-late summer, the insects reach their adult phase, ready to mate and continue the cycle.
Damage caused by this insect is primarily through the consumption of leaf tissue. Nymphs and adults feed on the leaf blades, often leaving the veins behind, which results in a skeletonized appearance. In severe infestations, trees are completely stripped of their foliage. This widespread defoliation limits photosynthesis, resulting in reduced radial growth and an increased susceptibility to secondary pests, pathogens, and drought conditions.
Control and management strategies are focused on minimizing economic and ecological impact:

- Deploying biological control agents, such as specialized fungi or natural predators.
- Applying registered systemic or contact insecticides when population thresholds are exceeded.
