Description
Systematic position. The Coconut stick insect (Graeffea crouanii) belongs to the order Phasmatodea, family Phasmatidae. It is a significant agricultural pest primarily found in the Pacific region, where it targets various species of palms, causing economic losses in coconut production.
Affected crops. The insect is primarily a pest of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). It is also known to infest various other palm species in ornamental gardens and plantations, making it a critical threat to palm-dominated ecosystems in tropical environments.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Females drop eggs onto the forest floor or plantation soil. Once hatched, the nymphs climb the palm trees to feed on foliage. The insect’s development is well-adapted to tropical climates, allowing for multiple generations or overlapping stages throughout the year.
Damage and pest status. As nocturnal feeders, these insects consume the leaf blades, often leaving only the midribs intact. Severe infestations lead to total defoliation, which severely reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the palm. This results in poor fruit set, stunted growth, and can ultimately lead to the death of the tree if the infestation persists.
Control measures. Management strategies are focused on long-term prevention and population suppression:
- Biological control using egg parasitoids, such as Myrmecomimesis species.
- Chemical control using targeted insecticide applications on palm trunks.
- Cultural practices like clearing debris around the tree base to destroy eggs.
- Regular monitoring and trapping to detect outbreaks early.
