The coconut stick insect (Graeffea crouanii) belongs to the order Phasmatodea and the family Phasmatidae. It is a significant agricultural pest primarily found in the Pacific Islands, known for causing extensive damage to palm populations throughout the region.

The main host plants for this species are coconut palms (Cocos nucifera), but it also attacks other palm species. Because these plants are essential for the local economy, the presence of this insect poses a severe threat to food security and agricultural productivity in tropical areas.

The life cycle begins when females drop eggs onto the ground beneath the palms. Once hatched, the nymphs must ascend the tree trunk to reach the foliage. The insect undergoes several molting stages, with its morphology and appetite increasing as it matures toward the adult phase.

The primary damage is caused by the intense defoliation of the trees. Both nymphs and adults consume large portions of the leaflets, often leaving only the midribs intact. This destruction reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, leading to stunted growth, reduced nut yield, and, in severe cases, the death of the entire palm.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for control. These include:

• Biological control through the introduction of egg-parasitoid wasps.
• Systemic insecticide injections into the palm trunk to minimize environmental impact.
• Cultural practices, such as clearing debris from around the base of the trees to disturb egg-laying sites.
• Regular field monitoring to detect early outbreaks before they cause widespread damage.

The effective management of Graeffea crouanii depends on timely intervention and the maintenance of a healthy balance of natural predators. Growers are encouraged to prioritize methods that preserve local biodiversity while maintaining the health and productivity of their palm plantations.
