Description
The genus Diatraea belongs to the Crambidae family and represents a group of highly destructive stem-boring moths. These insects are primary pests for crops such as maize and sugarcane, causing significant economic losses across the Americas by attacking the stems of host plants.
The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which bore into the stems shortly after hatching. By feeding on the internal pith, larvae destroy the plant's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients, which ultimately results in stunted growth and increased susceptibility to lodging during wind events.
The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females lay eggs in clusters on the leaves. Once the larvae emerge, they feed superficially before tunneling inside the stalk to continue their development. The pupal stage typically takes place within the larval gallery inside the stem.
Key symptoms of infestation include:
- small entry/exit holes on stalks;
- the characteristic "dead heart" symptom where the central leaf wilts;
- broken tassels and stunted ears;
- reduced sugar content in sugarcane;
- secondary infections from fungi invading the tunnels.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, destruction of crop residues, and the use of resistant hybrids are essential. Furthermore, biological control agents like Trichogramma wasps are frequently deployed, supplemented by targeted insecticide applications timed according to the pest's flight and oviposition patterns.
