The white-headed borer (Diatraea albicrinella) is a moth species belonging to the family Crambidae, known for its destructive impact on various graminaceous plants. As part of the stalk borer complex, this insect is a significant concern for large-scale agricultural production, particularly in regions with suitable warm climates.
This pest primarily targets crops such as sugarcane and maize. By feeding on the internal tissues of the host plant, the larvae disrupt the vascular structure, which is vital for the growth and development of the crop, ultimately leading to reduced yields and inferior quality of harvested produce.
The biological cycle of this pest involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Adult females lay eggs on the leaves, and upon hatching, the larvae quickly penetrate the stems.
