Description
The sugarcane moth borer (Diatraea canella) is an insect belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is a significant agricultural pest that primarily targets sugarcane crops in tropical and subtropical regions, impacting yields through stem tissue damage.
While sugarcane is its main host, the pest can also infest other graminaceous crops such as maize and sorghum. The larva is the stage responsible for the most severe damage, as it spends its development time boring into the stems of the plants to feed on the internal soft tissues.
The life cycle begins with eggs being laid on the leaf blades. Upon hatching, larvae disperse and quickly burrow into the stem. This behavior protects the larvae from surface-level insecticide applications and some natural predators.
