Sugarcane stem borer

Diatraea flavipenella is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. This species is widely recognized for its negative impact on agricultural productivity, primarily targeting members of the Poaceae family, most notably sugarcane.

The host range is predominantly focused on sugarcane, where the larvae cause the most damage. By boring into the stalks, the larvae consume internal tissues, effectively disrupting the plant's structural integrity and physiological processes. While sugarcane is the primary crop, the pest can also survive on various wild grasses present near agricultural fields.

The life cycle of this borer includes four developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid on the leaf surfaces. Once hatched, the larvae immediately seek entry points on the stalks. The larval stage is relatively long and is the period when the most intensive damage occurs as they tunnel throughout the stalk's interior.

Damage symptoms often include stunted plant growth, the death of the terminal shoot (known as "dead heart"), and increased susceptibility to secondary infections by fungi and bacteria. These infections often cause fermentation within the stalk, significantly reducing both the quality and the quantity of the extracted sugar, leading to substantial financial losses.

Management strategies for Diatraea flavipenella must be integrated to be effective. Key practices include the planting of resistant cultivars and the destruction of crop residues where larvae might overwinter. Biological control, such as the inundative release of Trichogramma wasps (egg parasitoids), is frequently employed in commercial fields to manage population levels without the excessive use of chemical insecticides.
