Description
The Southwestern corn borer (Diatraea grandiosella) is a destructive lepidopteran insect belonging to the Crambidae family. This species is native to the Americas and is recognized as a primary agricultural pest that significantly impacts maize production in affected geographical areas.
This pest primarily attacks corn (maize), although it can also infest sorghum and other related grasses. The larvae are the stage responsible for the most damage, as they feed on the internal tissues of the plant, starting from the whorl stage and eventually tunneling into the stalks.
The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Depending on temperature and geographic location, it can complete multiple generations annually. A distinct biological feature is the overwintering of mature larvae in the base of the corn stalks, where they enter diapause to survive winter conditions.
Feeding damage is severe, leading to "dead heart" symptoms in young plants, ragged foliage, and broken stalks at maturity. The tunneling disrupts the vascular system, significantly reducing nutrient transport, which results in stunted plant growth and substantial reductions in total grain yield.
