Description
Diatraea impersonatella is a moth species of the family Crambidae, widely recognized as a significant pest in agricultural sectors focused on sugarcane production. Its ability to infest crops throughout its larval stage makes it a persistent challenge for farmers in tropical and subtropical regions.
The primary host for this insect is sugarcane. The larvae tunnel into the stalks, consuming the internal vascular tissues, which directly inhibits the plant's nutrient and water transport systems. This results in significant quantitative and qualitative losses for commercial growers.
The life cycle begins when adult moths lay eggs on the leaves of the host plant. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the stem, where they feed and develop until pupation. Because the larvae spend most of their life hidden within the stalk, they are largely protected from environmental factors and standard insecticide sprays.
The damage is evidenced by stunted growth, the death of the central whorl of leaves, and structural weakness of the stalks. These physical injuries often lead to stalk breakage and can facilitate the secondary entry of pathogens, which further compounds the loss of yield and sucrose content.
Effective management requires an integrated approach that minimizes reliance on broad-spectrum chemicals. Recommended strategies include:
