Diatraea indigenella is a destructive lepidopteran pest belonging to the family Crambidae. It is recognized as a significant threat to agriculture, specifically acting as a stem borer that targets various grass species, causing severe physiological and structural damage to host plants.
The primary hosts for this species include maize (corn) and sorghum. The larvae show a distinct preference for the stem tissues of these plants, where they burrow through the stalks, creating tunnels that disrupt the transport of water and nutrients throughout the plant vascular system.
The life cycle encompasses four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Adult females deposit eggs on the host leaves; after hatching, the larvae move to the stalks to bore inside. They remain protected within the plant structure throughout their development, which makes conventional chemical treatments often difficult to time correctly.
Damage is characterized by internal tunneling, leading to the weakening of stalks, stunted ear development, and lodging. Yield loss occurs not only through direct biomass reduction but also through the secondary effects of reduced grain fill and increased susceptibility to fungal infections entering through the borer-made exit holes.
