Description
The larger sugarcane borer (Diatraea magnifactella) is a species of moth belonging to the family Crambidae within the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in various regions, particularly within Central America, where it poses a persistent threat to cereal crop production.
The primary host plant for this insect is corn (Zea mays). The larvae penetrate the stalk, creating tunnels that disrupt the vascular system of the plant. While corn is the main target, the pest can also thrive on sorghum and various wild grasses, which act as alternative hosts and allow the population to persist throughout the year.
The life cycle of the pest consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs on leaves, and after hatching, the larvae bore into the stalk to feed and develop.
