Description
The sugarcane borer (Diatraea saccharalis) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. This moth is infamous for causing substantial economic losses in various tropical and subtropical regions where industrial crops are grown.
The primary hosts of this insect are sugarcane and corn. However, it also demonstrates a high degree of host plasticity, affecting other graminaceous crops such as rice, sorghum, and millet, which allows the population to persist in agricultural landscapes year-round.
The life cycle begins with the female laying eggs in clusters on the leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae feed briefly on the foliage before boring into the stalk.
