Dichelops

The genus Dichelops belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae, commonly known as shield bugs. These insects are recognized as significant pests in various agricultural regions, particularly affecting broad-acre crops where they cause substantial economic damage.

The primary hosts for these bugs include soybeans, corn, wheat, and sunflowers. By feeding on the plant sap, these insects weaken the host plant, leading to significant physiological stress and hindering the development of the crop during its most sensitive phenological stages.

The biological cycle of Dichelops is characterized by rapid development and high reproductive potential. Eggs are typically laid in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The nymphs undergo five molts before reaching the adult stage, with the entire cycle being highly influenced by temperature and humidity levels.

The damage caused by Dichelops is direct and destructive. When feeding, the insects inject digestive enzymes into the plant tissues, which results in necrotic spots and systemic damage. Common symptoms include the abortion of pods in soybeans, reduction in seed quality, and severe stunt or death of young corn plants.
