Dirofilaria is a genus of parasitic nematodes belonging to the family Onchocercidae and the order Spirurida. It is essential for agronomists to distinguish between plant-parasitic nematodes, which cause significant yield losses, and animal parasites like Dirofilaria. This organism is not a plant pest and does not interact with the physiological processes of crops.
Systematically, these nematodes are obligate parasites that reside within the cardiovascular or subcutaneous tissues of vertebrates. Unlike common agricultural pests that attack root systems, tubers, or leaves, Dirofilaria species are biologically incapable of feeding on plant tissues or disrupting soil-plant nutrition cycles.
The life cycle of Dirofilaria involves a biological vector, primarily mosquitoes of the genera Culex, Anopheles, and Aedes. The developmental stages occur within the vector and the mammalian host. Prevention strategies remain within the domain of veterinary medicine and sanitation rather than agronomic plant protection.
