Onchocerca

The genus Onchocerca belongs to the family Onchocercidae within the order Spirurida. These organisms are not plant pests; they are significant parasitic nematodes (helminths) that infect vertebrates, including cattle, horses, and humans. Their presence in agricultural systems is strictly a concern for animal husbandry and livestock veterinary health.

The biology of Onchocerca involves an indirect life cycle requiring a biological vector. Adult worms reside in the subcutaneous tissues or connective tissues of the host, often forming characteristic nodules known as onchocercomas. The offspring, called microfilariae, migrate to the host's skin, where they wait to be ingested by a blood-feeding insect vector.

Blackflies (genus Simulium) or midges serve as intermediate hosts. Within the insect, the larvae undergo development into the infective stage. Once the infected insect bites a new mammalian host, the larvae enter the skin and migrate through the lymphatic or vascular system to their final site of localization, where they mature into adults and perpetuate the cycle.

The economic impact on agriculture is primarily linked to livestock productivity loss. Clinical onchocerciasis results in dermatological lesions, severe irritation, and potential damage to animal hides. Infected animals may experience decreased weight gain, reduced milk production, and general stress, which directly affects the profitability of cattle farming.

Effective management and protection strategies are entirely focused on veterinary intervention:

• Administration of anthelmintic medications such as ivermectin to eliminate microfilariae and adults.
• Implementation of vector control programs to reduce populations of blackflies near pastures.
• Use of insecticides and repellents on animals to prevent bites from disease-carrying insects.
• Regular diagnostic screenings of the herd to detect early signs of infestation.
