Ring nematode

Discocriconemella limitanea is a specialized type of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Criconematidae. These microscopic organisms are easily identified by the distinct rings on their cuticle, which gives them the common name ring nematodes. They function as ectoparasites, inhabiting the soil rhizosphere and feeding on the outer layers of plant roots.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including fruit trees, berry crops, and various garden vegetables. Discocriconemella limitanea is well-adapted to various soil types and environmental conditions, often persisting in the soil for long periods even in the absence of suitable primary hosts, although their populations thrive in the presence of their preferred crops.

The life cycle of this nematode involves an egg stage, four larval stages, and a sexually mature adult phase. Reproduction is typical for the family, with eggs being deposited in the soil matrix. Both juvenile and adult stages are capable of feeding on host tissues by using a specialized, piercing-sucking mouthpart known as a stylet to extract nutrients from root epidermal cells.

Damage to the plant is primarily caused by mechanical injury and subsequent chemical changes in the root tissues during feeding. The destruction of root hair cells limits the plant's ability to uptake water and essential minerals, leading to stunting, chlorosis, and reduced yield. In severe infestations, root systems may become stunted and necrotic, making the plant more vulnerable to secondary fungal or bacterial pathogens.
