Description

The stem and bulb nematode, belonging to the genus Ditylenchus (order Tylenchida, family Anguinidae), is a significant microscopic pest affecting a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops. These nematodes are obligate parasites that penetrate plant tissues to feed, causing physiological disorders and stunting.

Common hosts include onions, garlic, potatoes, strawberries, and various flower bulbs. Once inside the host plant, the nematodes migrate through the tissues, causing cell death and structural breakdown, which often leads to secondary infections by bacteria and fungi that destroy the crop.

The life cycle of Ditylenchus is highly adapted to environmental fluctuations. In the absence of host plants, they can survive in the soil or in desiccated plant tissues in a dormant state known as anhydrobiosis. This survival mechanism allows them to persist in fields for long periods even without favorable conditions.

Damage caused by this pest is typically characterized by stunted, twisted, or swollen stems and leaves. In bulb crops, the most evident symptom is the softening of the bulb tissue, often referred to as "bloating." Affected plants often fail to reach maturity, leading to substantial yield losses in both the field and storage.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Essential practices include using certified nematode-free planting material, implementing strict crop rotation intervals (often 3-4 years), and conducting soil solarization or chemical soil fumigation where permitted. Furthermore, proper sanitation and the removal of crop residues are critical to reducing the soil-borne population of the pest.
