Lily of the valley stem nematode

The lily of the valley stem nematode (Ditylenchus convallariae) is a microscopic soil-borne pest belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Anguinidae. This parasite specifically targets ornamental plants, causing structural damage that inhibits normal growth and reduces the aesthetic and commercial value of the crop.

The primary host for this species is Convallaria majalis (lily of the valley). The nematode invades the internal tissues of the plant, utilizing a specialized stylet to puncture cells and extract nutrients. This feeding process triggers abnormal cellular growth and tissue necrosis, leading to stunted development of the affected parts.

The biological cycle of the nematode is directly linked to the plant's physiology and environmental moisture. The entire life cycle, including egg, larval stages, and adulthood, occurs within the host tissue or the immediate rhizosphere. During adverse conditions, the nematodes can survive for long periods in a state of anhydrobiosis, waiting in the soil or decaying plant debris until favorable conditions return.

The damage caused by Ditylenchus convallariae is characterized by twisted and distorted leaves, yellowish streaks, and stunted stems that fail to produce healthy flowers. As the infestation progresses, the rhizomes may show signs of decay, which ultimately leads to the collapse of the plant population in the affected area.

Effective management strategies should focus on an integrated approach:

• Sourcing certified nematode-free planting material to prevent initial infestation.
• Maintaining strict field hygiene, including the removal and destruction of symptomatic plants.
• Implementing thermal treatment (hot water immersion) for infested rhizomes before planting.
• Rotating crops to non-host species to break the life cycle of the nematode in the soil.
• Applying recommended nematocides if local regulations permit, primarily in nursery settings to ensure plant health.
