Description

The stem and bulb nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci) is a devastating plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Anguinidae. It is a microscopic roundworm that invades the stem and bulb tissues of host plants, causing severe structural damage and developmental inhibition.

This pest has a very broad host range, including onions, garlic, potatoes, and various ornamental bulbs like tulips and narcissi. Because it can be transmitted through seeds and bulbs, it presents a significant threat to global agricultural trade and local crop productivity.

The life cycle typically takes about 3 to 4 weeks under favorable conditions, progressing through four juvenile stages before reaching adulthood. A critical survival mechanism is its ability to enter a state of cryptobiosis (anhydrobiosis), where it can survive for years in dried plant debris, resuming activity once moisture becomes available.

The damage is caused by the nematode feeding on parenchyma cells and secreting enzymes that lead to cell wall dissolution. This results in symptoms such as stunting, swelling of stems, leaf twisting, and the rotting of bulbs. Weakened tissue becomes highly susceptible to secondary infections by bacteria and fungi, often leading to total yield loss.

Effective integrated pest management (IPM) strategies include:

  • Using certified nematode-free seeds and planting material.
  • Implementing long-term crop rotation with non-host plants to reduce soil populations.
  • Rigorous weed control to remove alternative hosts.
  • Steam or hot-water treatment of bulbs prior to planting.
  • Strategic application of approved nematicides where infestation levels are high.
