Mushroom-spawn nematode
Ditylenchus myceliophagus
Description
Systematic position: The mushroom-spawn nematode (Ditylenchus myceliophagus) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Tylenchida, and family Anguinidae. It is a specialized vermiform parasite that thrives by consuming fungal hyphae as its primary food source.
Host crops: This nematode primarily affects the white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus). However, it can also infest other cultivated fungi such as oyster mushrooms, making it a significant threat in commercial mushroom production environments where the fungus provides a consistent food supply.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of D. myceliophagus is closely linked to the environmental conditions of the mushroom house. With optimal temperatures between 20°C and 25°C, the lifecycle can be completed within a few weeks. These nematodes are capable of surviving harsh conditions in an inactive state, allowing them to persist in equipment or contaminated substrate between growing cycles.
Nature of damage and impact: Infestations lead to the rapid destruction of the mycelial network. Affected spawn often turns yellowish or brown and becomes watery or slimy to the touch. This damage directly reduces nutrient absorption by the fungus, resulting in stunted, deformed fruiting bodies or complete failure of the mushroom crop to produce any yield.
- Ensure thorough composting and pasteurization to eliminate nematode eggs and active stages.
- Implement strict sanitation protocols for all tools, containers, and harvesting equipment.
- Use certified and high-quality casing material to prevent the accidental introduction of pests.
- Control the movement of staff and machinery to prevent cross-contamination between different growing rooms.
- Conduct regular substrate testing and monitoring to detect population increases before significant damage occurs.
