Systematic position: Dolichoderus is a genus of ants belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. Known for their unique morphology, these insects are found globally, often interacting with agricultural landscapes in ways that can negatively affect crop management and plant health.

Biology and life cycle: Like all ants, Dolichoderus live in complex social colonies consisting of a queen, workers, and brood. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. They are highly adaptable, nesting in various substrates including soil, decaying wood, and sometimes even within the structures of plant clusters.

Host crops: These ants are frequently associated with crops that are prone to infestation by honeydew-producing insects. This includes fruit trees (citrus, stone fruits), berry shrubs, and various ornamental plants. They are rarely pests in their own right, but their ecological role makes them significant vectors for other pests.

Nature of damage and pest status: The primary harm is indirect. Dolichoderus ants exhibit mutualistic behavior with sap-sucking pests like aphids and mealybugs. By protecting these pests from natural predators and parasites, the ants allow aphid populations to surge, causing severe plant stunting, leaf curling, and the development of sooty mold due to the accumulation of honeydew.

Control measures: Effective management of Dolichoderus populations requires an integrated approach:

• Application of sticky physical barriers on tree trunks to prevent ants from reaching canopy pests.
• Use of slow-acting toxic bait stations that allow workers to transfer the insecticide to the queen and larvae.
• Rigorous control of aphid and scale insect populations to eliminate the ant’s food source.
• Sanitation of the orchard floor to remove dead wood and debris that serve as nesting sites.
