Dolichoderus thoracicus
Dolichoderus thoracicus
Description
Dolichoderus thoracicus is an ant species belonging to the family Formicidae and the order Hymenoptera. While often noted for their ecological role, they are significant pests in tropical agriculture, particularly within the cocoa industry, due to their behavioral interactions with other agricultural pests.
The primary hosts for this species include cocoa, coffee, and various tropical fruit trees. The core issue arises from the obligate mutualism between these ants and sap-sucking insects like mealybugs and aphids. By tending and protecting these pests from predators, the ants facilitate large-scale outbreaks of sap-suckers that cause direct damage to the host plants.
The biological lifecycle of this species involves the construction of polydomous nests, often woven from plant debris and soil in the canopy of host trees. The colony structure is typically polygynous, allowing for rapid expansion and efficient resource gathering. Their dependence on honeydew secreted by homopterans makes their population density highly correlated with the infestation levels of these sucking pests.
Damage caused by this ant is largely indirect but severe. The presence of the ants prevents natural predators from controlling mealybug populations, leading to intense physiological stress on the plants. Furthermore, the ants may physically obstruct the movement of beneficial pollinators and, in some cases, cause necrotic spots on twigs by pruning or clearing areas for their nest structures.
Effective control measures require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach focusing on disrupting the ant-mealybug symbiosis. Cultural practices such as pruning affected branches and removing debris are critical. The application of sticky bands around tree trunks has proven effective in limiting ant access to the canopy, thereby allowing natural enemies to suppress the mealybug populations effectively.
