Hairy shieldbug

The hairy shieldbug (Dolycoris baccarum) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. It is a common insect pest widely distributed across Europe and Asia, known for its distinct hairy appearance and negative impact on berry and vegetable production.

This pest has a wide host range, feeding on various plants including raspberries, strawberries, currants, and gooseberries. Furthermore, it often infests vegetable crops such as tomatoes, beans, and peppers, using its piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract vital plant fluids from developing fruits.

The life cycle typically consists of one or two generations per year. Adults hibernate in sheltered areas such as leaf litter, hedge bottoms, or under tree bark. Once temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to feed and deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves, which hatch into nymphs that undergo several instars before reaching adulthood.

Damage caused by this bug is primarily cosmetic and physiological. Feeding leads to fruit discoloration, deformation, and the injection of salivary enzymes that impart a foul smell and bitter taste to the berries. In heavy infestations, this can lead to significant crop loss and reduced marketability.

Control strategies should focus on an integrated approach. Recommended measures include:

• Removing leaf litter and weeds to eliminate overwintering sites.
• Hand-picking adults in small gardens early in the season.
• Using row covers to physically block access to crops.
• Applying selective insecticides only when economic thresholds are reached.

Proper monitoring is essential to detect the bug early before significant damage occurs to the fruit clusters. Preventive cultural practices are generally the most effective way to manage small populations without disrupting the beneficial insect balance.
