Dorymyrmex insanus

Dorymyrmex insanus is a species of ant belonging to the subfamily Dolichoderinae, commonly found in arid and semi-arid environments. Known for their fast, erratic movement, these ants have adapted to withstand high temperatures, often being the most active species during the heat of the day when others retreat into their nests.

The biology of this species is characterized by the construction of crater-shaped mounds in open, sandy, or disturbed soil. Their life cycle consists of the standard social insect stages: eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Because of their highly social structure, they can quickly establish resilient colonies that are difficult to eradicate once they take root in an agricultural field.

The agronomic significance of Dorymyrmex insanus lies primarily in their mutualistic relationship with sap-sucking insects, such as aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects. By "herding" and protecting these pests from natural predators and parasitoids, the ants effectively facilitate the rapid spread of infestations that cause significant physiological stress to crops.

Physical damage can also occur when these ants nest in close proximity to young crops or seedlings. Their aggressive soil excavation around root zones can cause root exposure, desiccation of the root system, and mechanical damage, leading to stunted growth or the loss of early-stage plantings. This behavior is particularly detrimental in nursery and greenhouse settings.

Integrated pest management (IPM) for this species requires a combination of cultural and chemical controls:

• Application of bait stations containing slow-acting insecticides to eliminate the queen and the colony.
• Implementation of sticky barriers on fruit tree trunks to physically prevent ant access to the canopy.
• Targeted management of aphid populations to remove the ants' food source.
• Proper irrigation management to maintain soil health and discourage ants from settling in dry, loose soil.
