Description
The Vinegar fly (Drosophila funebris) is a species of small fruit fly belonging to the order Diptera and the family Drosophilidae. This insect is globally distributed and is commonly found in orchards, home gardens, and food processing facilities, where it is attracted to decaying organic matter.
These pests primarily target overripe, damaged, or rotting fruits, including apples, grapes, pears, and tomatoes. While they are generally considered secondary pests, they play a significant role in accelerating the deterioration of fruit by introducing bacteria and yeasts that cause rapid spoilage.
The life cycle of Drosophila funebris is optimized for survival in fermentation-rich environments. Females lay eggs directly into the tissues of vulnerable fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae feed voraciously on the fermenting material, progressing through larval stages before pupating near the food source or in the soil.
The damage caused by these flies results in significant post-harvest losses. Beyond the direct consumption of fruit tissue, the flies serve as vectors for various fungal pathogens, which leads to mold growth and total loss of commercial value for the affected produce.

- Using fine-mesh netting to exclude flies from sensitive crops during the ripening stage.
