Shore fruit fly

Systematic position. The shore fruit fly (Drosophila littoralis) belongs to the order Diptera, family Drosophilidae. Unlike many other species of fruit flies that prefer tropical climates, this specific species is well-adapted to cooler temperate zones, allowing it to survive and propagate in diverse geographic regions across Europe and North America.

Crops and damage patterns. This pest primarily targets soft-fleshed fruits and berries, including strawberries, raspberries, cherries, and currants. Larvae tunnel into the fruit flesh, creating galleries that destroy the internal structure of the berry. These entry points lead to rapid physical degradation, loss of firmness, and a high susceptibility to secondary infections by rot-causing fungi and bacteria.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Drosophila littoralis is recognized for its ability to undergo diapause, ensuring survival during cold winter months. Females utilize an ovipositor to insert eggs directly beneath the skin of ripening fruits, and the rapid developmental speed allows for multiple generations to occur within a single growing season.

Economic impact. The economic damage caused by this fly is severe, particularly for commercial growers. Infested crops lose all market value almost immediately. Furthermore, the presence of larvae inside berries often leads to the rejection of entire shipments due to quarantine regulations or strict consumer quality standards regarding the presence of pests in fresh produce.

Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies are essential for effective control:

• Strict sanitation protocols, including the daily removal and destruction of fallen fruit.
• Deployment of vinegar or yeast-based traps for monitoring and reducing adult population densities.
• Timely harvesting to avoid leaving overripe fruit on the plants for extended periods.
• Application of targeted insecticides compliant with local agricultural regulations during peak activity times.
• Maintenance of clean field borders to eliminate alternative wild host plants for the flies.
