Fruit fly

Systematic position: Drosophila melanogaster belongs to the order Diptera, family Drosophilidae. Although globally recognized as a model organism in genetics, in agronomic practice, it is classified as a significant pest, particularly in orchards and post-harvest facilities where it causes rapid degradation of produce.

Damaged crops: This pest attacks a wide variety of soft fruits and vegetables. Common targets include grapes, strawberries, raspberries, stone fruits, and tomatoes. It is particularly attracted to produce that is already bruised, overripe, or physically damaged, making it a major concern in orchards during the harvesting stage and in warehouses.

Biology and life cycle: The species is characterized by a remarkably short generation time, which can be as little as one week under optimal environmental conditions (around 25°C). The female deposits eggs into the soft tissue of fruits, where larvae quickly emerge and start feeding on the fruit tissue, accelerating the fermentation and decay process significantly.

Character of damage and harmfulness: Larval feeding leads to the destruction of fruit structure and tissue softening, resulting in a sour smell and leaking fluids. The damaged produce becomes unmarketable and acts as a reservoir for secondary infections, including molds and bacteria. This can lead to substantial economic losses for farmers and retailers due to the rapid spread of decay.

Protection measures: Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and monitoring practices. Key strategies include:

• Prompt removal and destruction of fallen or damaged fruit from fields.
• Rigorous sanitation of storage facilities to eliminate breeding sites.
• Implementation of traps (vinegar-based or synthetic lures) for population monitoring.
• Maintaining proper storage temperatures (cool chain management) to inhibit larval development.
• Strategic use of insecticides only when necessary, following label guidelines and pre-harvest intervals.
