Drosophila mercatorum is a species of small fruit fly belonging to the family Drosophilidae and the order Diptera. This pest affects a wide range of fruit and vegetable crops, including figs, grapes, tomatoes, and various stone fruits. It is particularly attracted to crops in the final stages of ripening or those that have already sustained physical damage, as the released sugars and moisture provide an ideal environment for egg-laying and larval development.
The life cycle of the species is characterized by rapid development, consisting of egg, three larval instars, pupa, and adult stages.
