Description

Drosophila phalerata is a species of fruit fly belonging to the family Drosophilidae, order Diptera. This insect is a characteristic component of forest and garden ecosystems, typically associated with decomposing organic matter; however, it can cause significant economic losses in agricultural settings when fruit crops reach maturity.

The pest primarily affects berries and fruits with soft skins that are at the physiological ripening stage or beginning to decay. In horticultural systems, this species is frequently observed on raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, and overripe stone fruits, especially when the outer peel exhibits micro-cracks or previous mechanical damage.

The biology of Drosophila phalerata is highly dependent on environmental temperatures. Females oviposit directly beneath the skin of damaged fruits. Larvae develop within the pulp, feeding on plant juices and tissues, which triggers rapid fermentation and spoilage. Under favorable conditions with temperatures exceeding 20°C, the life cycle from egg to adult is completed in approximately 10–14 days, allowing for multiple generations throughout the growing season.

The main damage is not restricted to larval consumption of fruit flesh; the flies also act as vectors for various fungal and bacterial pathogens. Infested fruit rapidly loses its commercial value, becoming unsuitable for storage, transport, or sale. In high-humidity conditions, an infestation by Drosophila phalerata can lead to the total loss of a harvest batch due to rapid souring and fungal rot.

Control measures require a comprehensive integrated pest management approach:

  • Prompt harvesting to prevent over-ripening on the plant.
  • Systematic removal and disposal of fallen or infested fruits from the field.
  • Deployment of bait traps (containing vinegar, wine, or yeast solutions) to monitor and reduce adult populations.
  • Maintaining strict phytosanitary conditions and utilizing exclusion netting during the fruit ripening stage.
