Forest fruit fly

Drosophila silvestris belongs to the family Drosophilidae within the order Diptera. While primarily a forest-dwelling species, it acts as an opportunistic pest that can invade commercial orchards and berry fields, especially when local environmental conditions facilitate a population surge near agricultural plots.

The primary hosts for this pest include a variety of ripe or decaying fruits. The fly is particularly detrimental to crops that have already suffered minor physical damage, as the presence of the fly and its larvae accelerates the onset of secondary rot, leading to rapid degradation of the produce quality.

The life cycle encompasses four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs directly beneath the skin of the fruit. The emerging larvae feed on the pulp, causing internal disintegration. Given optimal warm and humid weather, the life cycle is completed in a short timeframe, allowing the pest to produce multiple overlapping generations during the growing season.

Damage caused by this insect is easily identified by the softening of fruit tissues and an unpleasant sour fermentation odor. Infested fruits suffer from significant quality loss, becoming completely unsuitable for fresh consumption or commercial distribution. The economic impact is felt through substantial crop losses if sanitation measures are neglected.

Management strategies focus on reducing the breeding habitat and preventing access to fruit:

• thorough and frequent removal of fallen fruit from the orchard floor;
• utilization of vinegar or wine-based traps for population monitoring;
• maintaining orchard hygiene to eliminate potential food sources;
• timely harvesting to remove fruit before it becomes over-mature;
• application of approved insecticides during the peak activity period if thresholds are exceeded.
