Description
Drosophila subpulchrella is a significant fruit pest belonging to the family Drosophilidae within the order Diptera. Recognized as a highly invasive and destructive species, it poses a major threat to soft-skinned fruit production worldwide due to its ability to attack healthy, ripening fruits before harvest.
This pest affects a wide range of commercially valuable crops, including strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, grapes, cherries, and stone fruits. Unlike many common vinegar flies, it is specifically adapted to infest crops that are close to or at full maturity, causing substantial economic losses in both open fields and greenhouses.
The biology of this species is characterized by a rapid life cycle, consisting of egg, three larval instars, pupa, and adult stages. Favorable environmental conditions and temperatures allow for multiple generations per season, which enables populations to increase exponentially within a very short period of time.
Damage is caused primarily by the larvae feeding inside the fruit pulp. The female uses a serrated ovipositor to pierce the skin of healthy berries, introducing eggs into the flesh. Consequently, the infested fruit softens, collapses, and becomes highly susceptible to secondary fungal and bacterial rot, rendering it unmarketable.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this fly. Strategies include rigorous field sanitation to remove fallen or damaged fruits, the use of wine-vinegar-based monitoring traps to detect early activity, physical exclusion using fine mesh netting, and the targeted application of insecticides when threshold levels are exceeded.
