The spotted wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) is a member of the Drosophilidae family within the order Diptera. Unlike common vinegar flies that target decaying fruit, this species is a significant invasive pest because it possesses a hardened, serrated ovipositor capable of piercing the skin of healthy, ripening fruits.

This pest infests a diverse range of agricultural crops, most notably strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, and grapes. Because it attacks fruit shortly before harvest, the potential for rapid and widespread crop destruction is high, causing immense financial losses for growers.

The biology of Drosophila suzukii is defined by its rapid reproductive cycle and high fecundity.
