Duponchelia

Duponchelia (Duponchelia fovealis) is a destructive moth species belonging to the family Crambidae (order Lepidoptera). Originally from the Mediterranean region, it has spread to greenhouses worldwide. Due to its cryptic behavior and high reproduction rate, it has become a significant economic threat to both ornamental and vegetable crop production.

The pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. Major targets include popular ornamentals such as Begonia, Cyclamen, Kalanchoe, and Gerbera. Furthermore, it causes substantial damage to vegetable crops like peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers, making it a critical concern for modern horticultural facilities.

The biological cycle of Duponchelia comprises four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The moths are nocturnal, which helps them avoid detection during routine inspections. The larvae are the primary damaging stage, actively feeding on leaf tissue, stems, and fruits, often moving deep into the plant crown to escape external observation.

The damage caused by Duponchelia is distinctive. Infestation often begins with silken webs produced by larvae, accompanied by their characteristic frass (excrement). By boring into stems and crown areas, the caterpillars disrupt nutrient transport, leading to the wilting and collapse of the entire plant. Feeding on fruits renders them unmarketable and susceptible to rot.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach:

• Use of pheromone traps to monitor and reduce adult population density.
• Strict sanitation protocols, including the immediate removal of infested plant material and debris.
• Biological control through the release of predatory nematodes (e.g., Steinernema feltiae) targeting larvae in the soil.
• Application of selective biorational insecticides during the early larval stages when they are most exposed.
