Duponchelia moth

Duponchelia fovealis, commonly known as the Duponchelia moth, belongs to the family Crambidae. Originally a Mediterranean species, it has become a significant pest in greenhouse operations worldwide. Due to its high reproductive potential and adaptability, it poses a severe economic threat to both ornamental and vegetable crops.

This pest is polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast array of host plants. Major economic hosts include peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Among ornamentals, it frequently infests begonias, cyclamens, gerberas, roses, and various potted flowers. The larvae are particularly destructive as they feed on almost any part of the plant.

The life cycle encompasses four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are nocturnal and typically lay eggs near the base of stems or on the underside of leaves. The larvae are characterized by a cream-colored body with distinct dark spots on each segment. Once fully grown, they pupate in silk cocoons concealed within soil, debris, or plant tissue.

Damage caused by D. fovealis includes the destruction of leaves, buds, and stems. Larvae often bore into the stem, weakening the plant structure and causing it to wilt. Additionally, the larvae create silk webbing and leave excrement on the foliage, which compromises the aesthetic value of ornamental plants and provides an entry point for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this pest. Strategies include monitoring adult moth populations using pheromone traps and inspecting incoming plant shipments for signs of larvae. Biological control agents such as Steinernema feltiae (beneficial nematodes) applied to the soil and the release of predatory bugs have proven effective in reducing infestation levels without heavy reliance on chemical pesticides.
