Great diving beetle
Dytiscus circumcinctus
Description
Taxonomic classification. The great diving beetle (Dytiscus circumcinctus) is a member of the family Dytiscidae, within the order Coleoptera. It is a large, predatory aquatic insect commonly found in standing freshwater habitats. While it plays a role in the ecosystem, it is considered a significant pest in the aquaculture and fish-farming industry.
Targeted environments. The pest primarily impacts fish farming facilities, nursery ponds, and private decorative ponds. In these environments, the beetle poses a direct threat to juvenile fish, amphibians, and other small aquatic organisms that are vital for a healthy commercial or ornamental fish population.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle follows complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is particularly destructive. Known as "water tigers," the larvae possess sickle-shaped mandibles used to inject digestive enzymes into their prey. After completing the larval stage, the insect leaves the water to pupate in the soil along the shoreline.
Damage and economic impact. The main economic damage caused by Dytiscus circumcinctus is the predation of fish fry in hatchery ponds. A single larva can consume numerous small fish over its developmental period. High densities of these beetles can lead to substantial losses in fish recruitment, forcing farmers to take mitigation measures to protect their stock.
Control and management measures. Managing populations of diving beetles involves several professional practices:
- Implementing regular pond draining and cleaning cycles to disrupt the lifecycle.
- Applying lime to the pond bottom during the drying period to eliminate eggs and larvae.
- Installing fine-mesh screens on water inlets to prevent the entry of flying adult beetles.
- Manual removal of adults using light traps or specialized nets during the spring migration.
