Dytiscus semisulcatus, commonly known as a type of great diving beetle, belongs to the family Dytiscidae. While they are a natural part of aquatic ecosystems, they can become significant pests in aquaculture facilities, particularly in fish fry nurseries and hatchery ponds.

These beetles primarily target fish larvae, fry, and sometimes even larger fish. Because they are highly mobile and aggressive predators, they can cause substantial economic losses in intensive fish farming systems by drastically reducing the survival rate of the stocked juveniles.

The life cycle of this species consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit their eggs into the stems of submerged aquatic plants. The larvae, often referred to as "water tigers," are voracious predators that inject digestive enzymes into their prey to liquefy tissues before consumption.

The damage caused by Dytiscus semisulcatus is primarily characterized by the rapid depletion of fish fry populations. In controlled environments, a single larva can kill dozens of fish larvae in a short time. This predatory pressure necessitates active monitoring and management, especially during the breeding seasons of local fish species.

Management strategies focus on habitat modification to discourage colonization. This includes the manual removal of aquatic weeds, which serve as egg-laying sites.
