The genus Edessa is a notable group within the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. These insects, commonly referred to as stink bugs, are widespread in various climatic zones, primarily in the Americas. They are recognized by their distinct pentagonal shape and specialized mouthparts adapted for piercing and sucking plant sap.

Edessa species are known to attack a wide range of agricultural crops, with a particular preference for legumes, such as soybeans, and solanaceous plants. They are frequently observed in orchards and vegetable gardens, where they cause significant stress to the host plants by extracting essential nutrients from leaves, stems, and developing fruits.

The life cycle of these insects consists of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The development rate is highly dependent on ambient temperature and moisture levels. Females typically deposit their eggs in clusters on the underside of foliage, protecting the offspring from predators and environmental fluctuations during the early stages of development.
