Eichaitophorus is a genus of aphids within the family Chaitophoridae (order Hemiptera). These insects are specialized plant pests that exclusively target certain tree species, primarily maple trees, utilizing their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on nutrient-rich plant sap.

The primary host plants are various species of the genus Acer. These aphids are typically found on the undersides of leaves and on tender young stems. Their feeding activity is most intense during the active growing season when trees are developing new foliage, making the aphids a significant threat to saplings and ornamental trees.

The life cycle of Eichaitophorus is characterized by rapid population growth through parthenogenesis during spring and summer. They transition through several generations quickly, allowing them to overwhelm host plants in a short period. Winter survival is achieved through the egg stage, which the females deposit in the bark crevices of host trees, ensuring they emerge early the following spring.

The impact of this pest includes severe leaf curling, stunted growth, and premature senescence of the foliage. Furthermore, the aphids excrete a sugary substance known as honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungal growth obstructs photosynthesis, severely weakening the tree and degrading its aesthetic and physical health over time.

Control measures are essential for maintaining the health of affected maple stands:

• Application of systemic insecticides when early colonization is detected.
• Encouraging natural predators such as lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps.
• Removing heavily infested branches to reduce the overall aphid population.
• Monitoring trees in early spring to identify overwintering eggs before they hatch.
