Description
The brown china-mark moth (Elophila nymphaeata) is a member of the Crambidae family. This species is biologically fascinating because it is one of the few Lepidoptera whose larvae are fully aquatic, spending their entire juvenile stage living and feeding underwater.
This moth primarily targets aquatic plants with floating leaves, such as water lilies (Nymphaea), pondweeds (Potamogeton), and frogbit. In ornamental ponds, nurseries, or natural ecosystems, the moth can become a significant pest if population numbers go unchecked.
The lifecycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. Once the larvae hatch, they construct protective cases using fragments of host plant leaves held together by silk. These cases serve as both a shelter and a flotation device, enabling the larvae to survive in an aquatic environment.
Damage caused by this pest is easily identifiable. The larvae graze on the leaf tissue, creating distinctive holes or skeletonizing the leaves entirely. This damage reduces the photosynthetic area of the plant, which often leads to rotting, secondary infections, and ultimately the death of the affected foliage.
Effective management includes regular monitoring of pond plants and mechanical removal of leaves showing signs of larval infestation. For biological control, Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk) is considered an effective and environmentally friendly option for aquatic settings, provided it is applied according to local safety guidelines to protect aquatic fauna.
