Ello sphinx

Erinnyis ello

Description

Systematic position. The Ello sphinx (Erinnyis ello) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sphingidae. This species is recognized as a major pest of significant economic importance throughout the tropical regions of the Americas, where it frequently causes outbreaks that threaten regional food security.

Host plants. The primary host for this pest is cassava (Manihot esculenta). However, it is a polyphagous insect that can also infest rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis), papaya, and various species within the Euphorbiaceae family, making it a persistent threat to diverse agricultural and forestry plantations.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Erinnyis ello comprises egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. The adult moths are strong fliers with distinct, elongated wings. Females deposit eggs individually on the underside of leaves. Larvae develop through five distinct instars, with late instars becoming notably large and capable of consuming vast amounts of foliage before pupating in the soil.

Damage and economic impact. The larval stage is the primary source of damage. Due to their voracious appetite, these caterpillars can cause rapid and severe defoliation of host plants. The complete loss of photosynthetic surface area leads to stunted plant growth, reduced root tuber yield, and in extreme cases, the total death of the crop, resulting in substantial financial losses for producers.

Protection measures. Effective management of the Ello sphinx requires an integrated approach:

  • Biological control: Encouraging natural predators, such as parasitic wasps and predatory bugs, which effectively regulate pest populations.
  • Monitoring: Routine field inspections to detect early larval stages and prevent widespread infestation.
  • Chemical control: Utilizing selective insecticides targeted at younger larval stages to minimize impact on beneficial insects and ensuring compliance with local safety regulations.
