Description

The Long-horned bee (Eucera longicornis) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Apidae. It is a common misconception to label this insect as a plant pest. In reality, it is a highly beneficial pollinator that supports biodiversity and increases crop yields, particularly for leguminous species, without causing any harm to crops.

The biology of the species involves a solitary lifestyle. Female bees dig tunnels in the soil to create individual cells for their offspring. They collect pollen and nectar to provision these cells. Unlike social bees, they do not have a queen or workers, as every female manages her own nest independently in the ground.

The life cycle consists of one generation per year. Adult bees are typically active during late spring and early summer. Males are easily identifiable by their exceptionally long antennae. After mating and nest construction, the larvae develop inside the soil, where they remain to overwinter until the next season.

Regarding agricultural impact, Eucera longicornis causes no damage to plants. They do not consume plant tissues, stems, or leaves, nor do they spread plant pathogens. Their presence in agricultural fields is highly desirable, as they perform essential pollination services that machines or other species cannot replicate effectively.
