Description

The European grape berry moth (Eupoecilia ambiguella) is a significant pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is considered one of the primary threats to viticulture across Europe and parts of Asia, causing substantial reductions in both the quantity and quality of the grape harvest every year.

This pest exclusively targets grapevines, attacking various stages of the plant's reproductive organs. The larvae feed on flower buds, blossoms, and young berries. By creating holes in the berries, the moth provides an entry point for fungal pathogens, most notably Botrytis cinerea (gray mold), which often leads to further rot and complete destruction of the grape clusters.

The life cycle of the moth typically spans two to three generations per year, depending on the climate. The insect overwinters as a pupa within a silken cocoon hidden in bark crevices, old stumps, or leaf litter. The timing of the spring emergence of adult moths is closely linked to the phenological stages of the vine, often aligning with the onset of flowering.

The damage caused by the larvae is distinct and destructive. First-generation larvae web together and consume flower clusters, resulting in early crop failure. Second and third-generation larvae burrow into ripening berries, feeding on the pulp and seeds. This activity leads to uneven ripening, fruit drop, and susceptibility to rot, making the grapes unsuitable for winemaking or fresh consumption.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to minimize economic losses:

  • deploying pheromone traps to monitor flight patterns and population density;
  • maintaining good vineyard hygiene, including bark scraping to remove overwintering sites;
  • performing canopy management like leaf stripping to ensure better spray coverage;
  • timing insecticide applications to coincide with the larval hatching stage;
  • encouraging natural predators and utilizing biological controls such as specialized bacteria or viruses.
