Euprosterna

Euprosterna is a genus of moths belonging to the family Limacodidae, commonly known as slug moths. The larvae of this genus are distinct due to their smooth, fleshy bodies that move in a creeping motion, often lacking visible legs. Some species within the family possess stinging hairs or spines that can cause allergic reactions in humans upon contact.

These pests primarily target a wide range of woody plants, including commercial crops like coffee, cocoa, and various fruit-bearing trees. Their presence is most notable in tropical and subtropical climates, where they can cause significant foliage loss in plantations and ornamental gardens if left uncontrolled.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most destructive phase, characterized by voracious feeding on leaf tissue. The pupal stage occurs within a rounded, hard-shelled cocoon, which is often cleverly camouflaged to resemble a seed or gall on the host plant's bark or leaves.

Feeding damage is characterized by the consumption of large areas of leaf lamina, often leaving only the veins behind or creating irregular necrotic patches. Persistent defoliation by Euprosterna leads to reduced vigor of the host plant, stunted growth, and decreased agricultural yield, making early detection a priority for growers.

Effective management strategies should focus on both prevention and active intervention. Cultural practices, such as removing infested plant parts during the dormant season, help reduce the population for the following cycle. Chemical control using selective insecticides is recommended when larval populations reach economic damage thresholds, ensuring that natural predators are protected.
