Red-legged shield bug

The red-legged shield bug (Eurydema dominulum) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. This species is recognized as a significant pest of cruciferous crops, widely distributed across temperate regions where it utilizes a variety of host plants for feeding and reproduction.

The pest primarily targets members of the Brassicaceae family, including canola, mustard, cabbage, and radishes. Both adult bugs and nymphs possess piercing-sucking mouthparts, which they use to extract plant sap. This process inflicts mechanical damage and injects toxins that disrupt normal plant development.

The life cycle of Eurydema dominulum consists of egg, nymphal stages, and the adult phase. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of host leaves. Nymphs undergo five developmental instars, becoming increasingly voracious as they grow. The insect typically overwinters in the adult stage within plant debris or leaf litter.

Damage symptoms often appear as pale, chlorotic spots that eventually turn necrotic, leading to leaf distortion and holes. In severe infestations, the bug can cause significant stunting of young plants, reduced floral development, and substantial yield losses in oilseed crops due to decreased nutrient uptake.
