Rape bug

Eurydema oleraceum

Description

The Rape bug (Eurydema oleraceum) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. It is a well-known pest that poses a significant threat to various agricultural and horticultural crops, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia.

This pest mainly targets plants belonging to the Brassicaceae family. Key host crops include oilseed rape, cabbage, cauliflower, radish, mustard, and turnip. In addition to commercial fields, the bug thrives on wild cruciferous weeds, which serve as an alternative food source and a bridge for population growth.

The biology of the species involves overwintering as adults, typically hiding in debris or forest edges. As temperatures rise in spring, they migrate to host plants to feed and mate. Females lay their eggs in distinct rows on the underside of leaves. Depending on regional weather patterns, the insect may complete one or two generations per year.

The damage is caused by the bug piercing plant tissues and extracting cell sap.

  • Leaves exhibit yellow or whitish spots at the site of feeding.
  • Stunted development of young seedlings.
  • Wilting and necrosis of leaf tissue.
  • Reduction in overall crop vigor and commercial yield.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Field sanitation, including the destruction of weeds and deep plowing after harvest, is essential to limit overwintering sites. When infestation levels exceed established thresholds, the application of appropriate contact or systemic insecticides is necessary to prevent economic losses.
