Ornate shield bug

Systematic position. The Ornate shield bug (Eurydema ornata) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. It is a well-known agricultural pest that presents a significant challenge to farmers growing brassica crops across Europe, Asia, and North Africa.

Damaged crops. This insect is an oligophagous feeder, primarily targeting the Brassicaceae family. It poses a serious threat to oilseed rape, cabbage, mustard, radish, and various types of turnips. In the absence of primary crops, the bug thrives on wild cruciferous weeds, which serve as a reservoir for populations to persist and spread to cultivated fields.

Biology and lifecycle. Adult bugs overwinter under debris, leaf litter, or in the soil. Once temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to feed on early weeds before migrating to crop fields. The female lays eggs in characteristic double rows on the underside of leaves. The larvae undergo five instars, progressively increasing in size and mobility until they reach the adult stage.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The Ornate shield bug uses its piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract sap from plant tissues. During feeding, they secrete saliva that destroys plant cells, leading to yellowing, necrosis, and deformation of the leaves. Severe infestations often result in stunted growth, aborted flowers, and significant yield losses in terms of both quality and quantity.

Protection measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Eurydema ornata.

• Sanitation of fields to eliminate weeds like shepherd's purse or field mustard.
• Early sowing of crops to ensure plants pass the most vulnerable stage before peak bug activity.
• Application of insecticides, preferably at the larval stage when they are most susceptible.
• Maintaining optimal crop nutrition to improve plant tolerance to pest attacks.
