Painted shield bug

Systematic position. The painted shield bug (Eurydema pulchrum) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. These insects are well-known for their vibrant red, black, and white markings, which are aposematic coloration intended to warn predators of their chemical defenses. They are significant agricultural pests in regions where cruciferous crops are grown intensively.

Crops damaged. This pest primarily targets members of the Brassicaceae family. Its host plants include a wide range of commercially important crops such as rapeseed (canola), mustard, cabbage, broccoli, radish, and kale. By utilizing various weeds within the same family, the bug maintains high populations throughout the growing season, moving between wild and cultivated hosts.

Biology and life cycle. The species overwinters as an adult in sheltered locations such as leaf litter, garden debris, or under the bark of trees. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on wild hosts before migrating to crop fields. Females lay eggs in distinctive geometric patterns on the underside of leaves. The life cycle comprises an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage, typically completing one to two generations annually.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. Both nymphs and adults utilize piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant sap. During feeding, they inject salivary enzymes into the plant tissue, which causes the destruction of cells. Symptoms include wilting, chlorotic spotting, stunting of the plant, and in severe cases, the complete abortion of flower buds and pods, leading to significant yield losses in oilseed rape and leafy vegetables.

Protection measures. Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, deep tillage in autumn to destroy overwintering sites, and the elimination of cruciferous weeds in field margins are essential. In cases of high infestation, chemical control using systemic or contact insecticides is recommended, focusing on the early stages of nymphal development when the insects are most vulnerable to treatment.
