Description
Systematic position: The wrinkled shield bug (Eurydema rugosum) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. It is a specialized pest primarily recognized in East Asian agricultural systems, where it poses a recurring threat to the production of cruciferous vegetable crops.
Host plants: This insect primarily attacks plants within the Brassicaceae family. Key agricultural targets include various types of cabbage, radish, turnip, rapeseed, and mustard. The presence of these crops in close proximity to unmanaged cruciferous weeds often leads to higher pest density and increased crop damage.
Biology and life cycle: The species overwinters as an adult in sheltered locations such as leaf litter, soil crevices, or crop debris. As temperatures rise in the spring, the overwintered adults become active, move to host plants for supplementary feeding, and begin the reproductive phase. Eggs are typically deposited in clusters on the undersides of leaves, and the nymphs undergo several developmental instars before reaching the adult stage.
Nature of damage: The wrinkled shield bug possesses piercing-sucking mouthparts. By extracting plant sap, it disrupts the vascular system and physiological processes of the host. The feeding sites exhibit discolored, necrotic spots, leading to leaf distortion, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the complete collapse of seedlings or loss of marketable yield quality.
