Cabbage bug

Systematic position. The cabbage bug (Eurydema ventralis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. This insect is a notable agricultural pest, widely distributed across temperate and warm regions, known for its distinct coloration and its ability to damage a variety of cruciferous plants.

Crops damaged. The primary hosts for this pest include members of the Brassicaceae family. It poses a significant threat to various cabbage varieties, radishes, rapeseed, mustard, and horseradish. By feeding on these crops, the pest can significantly impair both vegetative growth and the final quality of edible plant parts.

Biology and lifecycle. Adults overwinter in sheltered locations such as leaf litter, hedges, or under thick vegetation. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to mate and lay eggs on the undersides of host leaves. The eggs are deposited in characteristic rows. The nymphs undergo five developmental stages (instars) before reaching maturity, all while actively feeding on the sap of the host plants.

Nature of damage. Both nymphs and adults feed by piercing the plant tissues and extracting sap. The injection of saliva during feeding causes localized damage, appearing as whitish or necrotic spots. Severe infestations can cause leaf yellowing, stunting of plants, and potential crop failure in young seedlings. Furthermore, the presence of these bugs can render vegetable products unmarketable due to unsightly spotting and structural damage.

Control measures. Successful management relies on a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Key practices include:

• Strict weed control to eliminate alternative hosts.
• Crop rotation to break the pest cycle.
• Autumn soil cultivation to disturb overwintering sites.
• Application of approved insecticides when pest populations exceed economic thresholds.
